My Garden

Last winter, while I was pregnant, all I could dream about doing in the spring was plant my garden. It would have been the best garden ever, full of tomatoes, squash, potatoes and plenty of fresh herbs. I would use these to make delicious meals and preserves and never have to worry about looking for 'organic' food in the grocery store. Alas, because Nature hates me, that never happened. After F was born I was sent to hospital not once, but TWICE, with serious infections. I then had two more infections. Recovering was not easy because of the anaemia from my emergency c-section. I'm very disappointed. I keep looking out at the empty backyard and keep rearranging the plants in my head. I did however manage to plant a few things. Most notably is a few herbs; right now I have Garlic Chives, Basil and Cilantro.

I also have a wild Strawberry plant that I saved from the hacks of the lawnmower. Phil was mowing one day and I noticed a red spot on the grass - I took a closer look and low and behold it was a tiny strawberry. I dug it up and placed it with the herbs to see if it would grow.

Now over a month later it's practically taking over my tiny herb garden. I don't think I'll keep it though, they seem to be growing out instead of up...

I did also plant my potatoes. I had seen on a Jamie Oliver show that he and his gardener planted some potatoes in a sac of compost. I thought it was a brilliant idea and set about looking for information. Then I came across this guy, he suggested planting potatoes in old tires - good for recycling and they act as an incubator. My parents had some old tires and mom gave them to me to give it a try. I had a few Red Potatoes under the sink that were growing limbs and had some decay - I cut them up and planted them on June 30th.

This is what they looked like yesterday!

Two weeks after planting the Reds I planted some Yukon Golds - everywhere I read up on growing potatoes this species was a recurring name. So I cut those up, let the cut sides scab over and planted them also - I had a tiny sprout yesterday :D

Finally, I have two tomato plants that mom and I salvaged from the Scary Garden. We loaded them up in some beautiful compost (also from mom's garden) they now sit quietly basking in the sun on my deck.

I was afraid the bigger one wouldn't flower but it does have a few buds.

I'll keep everyone posted as these few items keep thriving! Happy gardening!

Mother's Garden = Scary

My wonderful mother used to tend to her garden regularly; she would have beautiful vegetables for our plates and flowers for the table. However, this was when my siblings and I were young. Now that we've all grown up and left home (most of us...), my mom returned to work and has not had the time or energy to keep up such a big yard. Dad has not been too please with the situation and hinted that everything should be hacked down (ahem... very sensitive Father...)

Today we tackled the veritable magical forest that was growing in the back yard. It was scary. Seriously. Just think of a beautiful garden that has not been weeded, cut, cultivated, or loved for over THREE YEARS. That my dear friends that was what we were faced with.

If you're wondering why my mom would plant a tree right at the foot of the deck I must warn you that it is in fact a rose bush... yes, trust me, it's been there for years.

Now if you look beyond the yellow flowers, you'll see some strange leafy thing taking over the left side of the yard. That is the raspberry bush from HELL! Trust me on that one too; it's been there longer than the roses.

garden2

What? Wait a minute mom doesn't have garden gnomes....

garden3

Ack! The raspberry bush from hell has mom! Quick, poke it with something!

garden4

Four hours later we have taken back the yard... it was a long and tedious battle full of bees (ACK!) and spiders (YIKES!) and 5 bags full of yard waste.

This is what is left of the herb garden.

The grass must have been at least a foot high before I tackled it with the push mower (those things are soooo cool!)

garden7

This was mostly flowers and ferns but they were so thick and high that you couldn't see the fence - just take a look at the first image at the top and you'll remember.

garden8

We managed to cage the evil beast of a raspberry bush. Mother, stop picking all the good ones!

garden9

Gratuitous picture of my kid sucking her fist; she just discovered it last week.

garden10

Look momma, I've slobbered all over Pépère's shirt! Oh and feed me. NOW.

garden11

Oh the excitement was too much for my little munchkin. Maybe next week we'll take a closer look at momma's garden.

Papanak Zoo

I have never been to the zoo, my parents never took us to one as kids and the thought of wild animals living in caged up pens makes me sad. Tuesday I was invited to go the Papanak Zoo in Wendover with some girlfriends and our 'brood' of children. However sad zoos are, we really needed to be outdoors for the day and this was it.
There were 9 of us; a really nice girls only group. We loaded the babies in the van and headed off on the half hour drive to the zoo. Now it probably wasn't the best day because it was sweltering outside and the sun was hiding behind clouds and I was careless and didn't wear sunscreen... even F got a little sunburnt on her face. Oi, not a good thing for an 8 week old and I'm burnt to a crisp. I've loaded up some pictures, please forgive the wire fences because they were everywhere and I couldn't get many decent shots. And don't worry, my bff Neardly and I vowed to never go again.

The baby monkeys were adorable!

The white handed Gibbons were the most entertaining animals in the park. They actually enjoyed performing. After we left their island a huge group of kids were next and they were applauding and cheering and the silly things were putting on quite a show! I got a short video of two gibbons at the watering hole but this was before that huge crowd came...

This next one is the Sacred Baboon - male baboons who have a harem grow long silver fur like this guy. If his harem is stolen away, he'll actually lose all his silver and turn brown like the females! There was also a 2 month old baby and he was jumping around everywhere and he kept stealing a stick from his mom.

This poor chicken had three roosters running after her under our picnic table! Mighty popular lady!
