July 2008 Archives

Yes, today is the day I've been dreading for the past week: immunization day.

The shots went relatively well; F was already cranky and crying before shot got the shots and just screamed harder when the nurse poked her. My poor kid; I think she's teething. I wouldn't be surprised because I had my first teeth when I was 4 months old and she's almost three months now. Gods... how time flies! She's also growing like a mutant weed and is going to be this tall willowy child of Nature - she's already 24 1/4 inches long!! Guess it helps when Daddy is 6'3" lol.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and try and go cloth diapers again - I've had horrible experiences with the ones mom bought. They're the ones that you have to fold and then pin and then wear a plastic-ish cover. I had no problem with the folding and F seemed to be comfortable and yet in less than an hour she has soaked through the diaper AND her outfits! I had given up hope until I found the most AMAZING diapers at the local natural foods store - gDiapers! They have disposable/compostable liners but however convenient though, I think I would just make some liners instead and save on having to buy the packs of liners...I figure if I bought the starter pack (includes two 'shells', 4 snap-in waterproof liners and 10 of the disposable liners) I'd be good and then get new 'shells' every now and then. The prices seem to differ though so I want to get the best bargain. Better Baby Bums has it for $32 but ships them out of Vancouver so I'd have to pay through the nose for shipping ($15 according to the website!) to Ontario - total purchase $49.33. Ecomama list the kit at $37 and it located right near the house (bonus for convenience the owner, Nathalie, even offered to drop it off at the house on her way to the post office which just happens to be in front of my house!) - total purchase $42.75. Finally, Neardly bought hers at Pantry Plus and paid $44 plus tax. SO - think it's worth my while??

Papanak Zoo

I have never been to the zoo, my parents never took us to one as kids and the thought of wild animals living in caged up pens makes me sad. Tuesday I was invited to go the Papanak Zoo in Wendover with some girlfriends and our 'brood' of children. However sad zoos are, we really needed to be outdoors for the day and this was it.
There were 9 of us; a really nice girls only group. We loaded the babies in the van and headed off on the half hour drive to the zoo. Now it probably wasn't the best day because it was sweltering outside and the sun was hiding behind clouds and I was careless and didn't wear sunscreen... even F got a little sunburnt on her face. Oi, not a good thing for an 8 week old and I'm burnt to a crisp. I've loaded up some pictures, please forgive the wire fences because they were everywhere and I couldn't get many decent shots. And don't worry, my bff Neardly and I vowed to never go again.

The baby monkeys were adorable!

The white handed Gibbons were the most entertaining animals in the park. They actually enjoyed performing. After we left their island a huge group of kids were next and they were applauding and cheering and the silly things were putting on quite a show! I got a short video of two gibbons at the watering hole but this was before that huge crowd came...

This next one is the Sacred Baboon - male baboons who have a harem grow long silver fur like this guy. If his harem is stolen away, he'll actually lose all his silver and turn brown like the females! There was also a 2 month old baby and he was jumping around everywhere and he kept stealing a stick from his mom.

This poor chicken had three roosters running after her under our picnic table! Mighty popular lady!

Philosophical Conversation

My little brother (he's seventeen...) is a very strange character indeed. Loud and obnoxious, he's a very deep thinker with that endearing geeky awkwardness mixed in. He's the only person (other than yours truly...) who can quote from old talkies and from modern sci-fi flicks and movies, often in the same sentence. He's also the only person I know who enjoys life and is a little emo on the side (ok, make that a lot emo on the side, who else wears a Fedora and a Nightmare Before Christmas tie together?). Here's a pretty ridiculous excerpt from a conversation we had today about his MSN screen name - "I want to love but the pain was too unbearable"
